TWU: DRIVER SHORTAGES LINKED TO VIOLENCE AGAINST BUS DRIVERS UNDER OPERATION WARATAH

The Transport Workers Union of NSW (TWU) welcomes the establishment of a police operation aimed at targeting offenders involved in violent crimes on public transport across Sydney and says this highlights the ongoing risks to safety which bus drivers on these essential services face daily.

Among the incidents under investigation as part of Operation Waratah – headed by the NSW Police Transport Command – are multiple assaults against bus drivers, underscoring the urgent need for better safety measures and support.

On January 9, 2024, a bus driver was assaulted while driving in Winston Hill, with the perpetrator punching the driver in the face before fleeing the scene. Another shocking incident occurred on December 14, 2023, when a driver in Miranda was punched in the back of the head while inspecting his vehicle.

Violence and aggression towards drivers occurs because of passenger frustration when buses run late or are canceled due to chronic driver shortages and not enough turnaround or running time. According to the 2023 Bus Industry Task Force report, Sydney is short 409 drivers.

The TWU warns this will become worse as drivers are paid some of the lowest wages in the country, coupled with increasing shortages due declining conditions and the closure of rail between Sydenham and Bankstown.

In 2023, the TWU launched its Road to Respect campaign which fights on behalf of bus drivers to rebuild the industry from the ground up in order to resolve many of the issues which result in assaults on public transport.

TWU NSW/QLD State Secretary Richard Olsen said bus drivers are the backbone of Sydney’s public transport system and their safety should be a top priority.

“Violence against public transport workers is unacceptable and it’s imperative stronger safety measures are implemented and drivers are provided the necessary support to ensure their well-being.

“Operation Waratah is a crucial step towards protecting these essential workers, with the incidents in Winston Hill and Miranda stark reminders of the dangers our drivers face daily.

“Every worker deserves to feel safe on the job.”
