Flight delays and cancellations have been avoided as Sydney Airport refuellers call off strike action set for tomorrow after Ampol Aviation returned to the negotiating table and offered significant improvements around fairer pay and job security.
This afternoon, last minute crisis talks between a Transport Workers Union (TWU) member-led bargaining team and Ampol were held, resulting in a better offer being made to refuellers.
While a number of items are still outstanding, members have agreed to meet with Ampol in good faith again on Friday to hopefully come to a resolution.
Workers had planned for six hours of strikes across multiple shifts after negotiations stalled. Cancellation and delays could have been widespread, as Ampol services 16 domestic and international airlines including Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Delta and British Airways.
TWU NSW/QLD State Secretary Richard Olsen said industrial action was always a last resort and with movement from the company on workers’ demands, averting disruption to the public was a positive outcome.
“It shouldn’t be so hard for workers to achieve pay increases above bare minimums and job security. This is a step in the right direction, but we will remain vigilant to ensure Ampol upholds their commitments.”
“We must address the systemic issues within the aviation industry that prioritise profits over people. The establishment of a Safe and Secure Skies Commission is critical to safeguard the rights and welfare of aviation workers and ensure the industry’s long-term viability.”
“We call on all stakeholders to support initiatives which promote fair wages, safe working conditions, and job security. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable aviation industry that benefits everyone.”
