FAIR WORK COMMISSION BACKS TWU’S STAND AGAINST CLEANAWAY’S SEVEN DAY WORKWEEK PROPOSAL

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) is celebrating a victory as the Fair Work Commission (FWC) grants an intractable bargaining declaration at Cleanaway’s Wollongong site. This comes as Cleanaway attempts to impose unreasonable changes to ordinary work hours.

Cleanaway sought to introduce a clause allowing rostering of employees to work from Monday to Sunday, citing it as essential for future operations. The company’s insistence on altering working conditions was met with a resounding rejection from TWU members.

Despite over a year of negotiation and dozens of bargaining meetings, no agreement has been reached with Cleanaway’s management. TWU members have rejected proposed changes, citing concerns about maintaining current conditions and avoiding a two-tier workforce.

The FWC ordered a 21-day post-declaration negotiating period to facilitate further discussions between the TWU and Cleanaway, aiming to expedite the resolution process without undue delay.

TWU NSW/QLD State Secretary Richard Olsen said the victory was a testament to the unwavering solidarity of TWU members in defending their rights against corporate greed.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear: they will not accept a two-tier workforce or any changes that undermine their livelihoods. This victory is a testament to their determination.”

“We will use this momentum to continue fighting for fair and just working conditions across all industries. The TWU stands ready to defend workers’ rights wherever they are threatened.”

This victory reinforces the power of collective bargaining and the unwavering commitment of TWU members to defend their rights. The TWU will continue to fight for fair and just working conditions, ensuring that worker’s voices are heard and respected in every negotiation.
