ACT GOVERNMENT ACTS ON BUS DRIVER SAFETY AFTER SNAP STRIKE SPARKS ACTION

The Transport Workers’ Union of NSW/ACT (TWU) has welcomed the ACT Government’s commitment to improve bus driver safety but is disappointed it took a snap strike by hundreds of workers last Friday to prompt action.

Transport Canberra has confirmed plans to install new safety screens across the city’s bus fleet to protect drivers from escalating abuse. A training partner has also been found to provide de-escalation training starting February next year.

In addition, a new team of transit officers will maintain a visible presence on buses and at interchanges to deter violence against drivers. The ACT Government is also working to legislate additional powers for transport officers to manage problem passengers.

More than 40 assaults on drivers are reported each month, with incidents including bags of rotten fish being dumped on drivers, full cans of soda thrown at their heads, physical violence, spitting and verbal abuse.

TWU NSW/ACT State Secretary Richard Olsen said the safety of Canberra bus drivers should never have been up for negotiation.

“While we welcome this commitment from the ACT Government, it’s frustrating that it took drivers walking off the job in desperation to force action on a crisis that has been escalating for years.”

“Forty assaults a month is an unacceptable reality for bus drivers in the ACT. No worker should have to fear for their safety just for doing their job. These measures are a good start, but we’ll be holding the government accountable to ensure these promises translate into real change.”

“When bus drivers are under threat, the entire community suffers. Drivers are the backbone of our transport system, and they deserve to be treated with respect. We’ll continue to fight for safe workplaces where every driver feels protected and valued.”
