We are supporting the referendum for a Voice to parliament

Every day at the TWU, we fight for transport workers to have a powerful voice.

Around the country, TWU members have been joining the Yes campaign for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, with the referendum coming up on Saturday Oct 14.

We have the opportunity over the next few weeks to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members, friends, and communities in the historic campaign for Voice to Parliament.

TOP 5 REASONS WHY THE TWU IS SUPPORTING THE VOICE TO PARLIAMENT:

SOLIDARITY

Over 80% of Indigenous Australians support the Voice. The Voice was endorsed by over 250 Indigenous delegates as part of the Uluru Statement From the Heart. This goes directly to our union values of solidarity and standing up for one another.

A ONCE IN A GENERATION OPPORTUNITY

The Voice will be a simple amendment to our constitution that will lead to positive change for Indigenous communities and all Australians.

WE SHOULD ALL HAVE A SAY IN DECISIONS THAT AFFECT US

The minimum First Nations peoples deserve is that their voices be respected and listened to before laws and policies are made that directly affect them.

EQUALITY AND RECOGNITION IS UNION BUSINESS

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a proud history of working with and being active in their unions. Our shared history is filled with unions not only fighting for the working rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples but also fighting and supporting their campaigns for justice on social issues.

GROUPS ACROSS AUSTRALIA ARE COMING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THE YES VOTE

The Yes vote is proudly supported by the broader union movement, community groups, major sporting codes, businesses and countless legal groups—more than 500 organisations in total.
