Newcastle & Northern NSW Sub-branch: Leading the Charge

This has been an incredibly active time for our union and for the Newcastle and Northern NSW Sub-branch. Between the efforts our team has put into training, putting members and safety at the forefront, to the ongoing fights we’ve had to protect members across the industry, including in our ongoing Regional Bus EA bargaining and advocacy for BORAL Tippers workers, there has truly never been a better time to join the TWU.

Our members and delegates are being empowered to be a powerful voice in the workplace, and are leading the charge for lifting industry standards up to the benchmark.

We have won many hard-fought protections, and continue to do so. But it’s important to work to protect them. As Sub-branch Secretary, I know that together along with delegates & member support, we can ALL contribute to better safety and workplace conditions, by supporting the ALP on election day.

BORAL Tippers:

Delegates and members of BORAL Tippers (Seaham quarry) have joined forces with Labor Port Stephens Councillor, Giacomo Arnott, to elevate the issue of job security and safety amongst their community.

Giacomo committed to attend the yard at the invite of TWU Delegate’s Shaun Preston, Devin McNab, and TWU official Rebecca Hopkins.

Sub-branch secretary Mick Forbes says:

“It’s great to see our local Labor Councilor fulfill his commitment to attending our TWU member led workplace and to hear firsthand, the job security and safety concerns of our members”.

CDC Regional Bus EA bargaining:

CDC delegates Rachel Sheppard, Daniel Slattery, as well as HSR Mark Llewellyn – all from the North Coast region – along with Mark Middleton-Narrabri, Rebecca Hopkins & Daryll Elliott from the TWU have reached an in-principle agreement with CDC that lifts Bus Industry standards and rates of pay up to a benchmark not previously seen in the regional areas of the North & West of the Newcastle sub-Branch.

This group of regional TWU delegates and members have relentlessly pursued equity and a fair-go in this case. By lifting standards up to the benchmark, delegates and the union help avoid a race to the bottom.

CDC yards in the Northeastern and Northwest of NSW will soon be visited by TWU officials prior to voting on the draft EA. If you are a member, Sub-branch secretary Mick Forbes urges you to help your delegate committee by speaking to non-members about joining the TWU.

Sub-branch secretary Mick Forbes says:

“If you are a bus driver in these areas, and know anyone whose ever had any doubt joining their Union.. There has truly never been a better time to join the TWU.”
