Independent review of toll roads welcome
The Transport Workers’ Union welcomes the independent review of New South Wales’ toll roads, led by Allan Fels, as a step towards addressing the exploitative system affecting owner-drivers and the transport industry.
The review proposes several changes, including a new Middle Class Heavy Vehicle classification.
This classification, covering vehicles 3.3 meters high or less and 12.5 meters long or shorter, aims to lower the toll multiplier from three times that of a car to two times, providing fairer pricing for heavy vehicles in Sydney’s toll network.
This change would ease financial pressure on owner-operators of smaller heavy vehicles, who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.
The review exposes how private company profits have overshadowed motorists’ needs, with $195 billion in tolls expected by 2060, over half from WestConnex concessions. The proposed declining distance-based pricing could help, but a toll cap for heavy vehicles is also necessary.
We urge the NSW Labor government to consider these recommendations seriously to create a fairer toll system. The TWU is ready to collaborate on implementing these overdue reforms.
Drivers Gear Up for Transport Reform!
This week, drivers at TGE Palletised Express met for an information session on the hugely important Transport Reform legislation which will come into effect next month.
We’re launching the next phase of the fight, ready to make the first series of applications when the laws become active on 26 August.
| We’ll be fighting for: 1. Safer Standards: Establishment of enforceable safety and fairness standards through the Road Transport Expert Panel. 2. Enhanced Protections: Protections against unfair contracts, terminations, and minimum working conditions, covering all transport workers, including gig economy participants. 3. Fair Payment Practices: Fair payment terms, such as maximum 30-day payment terms, and elimination of unfair contract terms to ensure timely and adequate compensation. 4. Gig Economy Regulations: Minimum wage protections, leave entitlements, injury insurance, and union representation for gig workers to prevent exploitation and improve working conditions. |

Rising Violence Against Sydney Bus Drivers
The TWU supports Operation Waratah, a vital police initiative targeting violent crimes on Sydney’s public transport. This operation sheds light on the severe safety risks bus drivers face daily.
Recent assaults are deeply troubling: on January 9, 2024, a driver in Winston Hill was brutally punched in the face, and on December 14, 2023, a driver in Miranda was violently struck in the head.
No worker should ever feel unsafe while doing their job. The TWU calls for immediate action to enhance safety measures, citing that violence often results from passenger frustration due to chronic driver shortages and delays.
With Sydney short 409 drivers and worsening conditions, the TWU’s Road to Respect campaign fights to rebuild the bus industry and ensure every driver can work without fear.
